The exact number of the sisters was never fully known and it was told differently in the many versions of the story told in ancient Greece some said three, some four, some way more than that. He was unable to control the horses and fell to his death (according to most accounts, Zeus struck his chariot with a thunderbolt to save the Earth from being set afire).
Their brother, Phaëthon, died after attempting to drive his father’s chariot (the sun) across the sky.
According to another version, there were five: Helia, Merope, Phoebe, Aetheria, and Dioxippe. Aeschylus’s fragmentary “Heliades” names Phaethousa and Lampetia, who are otherwise called daughters of Neaera. The other Aegle is the most beautiful of the Naiads, daughter of Zeus and Neaera, by whom Helios begot the Charites. At Apollo’s request, Asclepius was placed among the stars as Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer.īasically I’d say that this Aegle might as well be the personification of a healthy body, or after the process of cure. Zeus felt that the immortality of the Gods was threatened and killed the healer with a thunderbolt. Asclepius was taught about medicine and healing by the wise centaur, Cheiron, and became so skilled in it that he succeeded in bringing one of his patients back from the dead. While burning on the funeral pyre, Apollo felt pity and rescued the unborn child from the corpse. When Apollo found out, he sent Artemis to kill her. While pregnant with Asclepius, Coronis secretly took a second, mortal lover.
